David Tennant Review Of The Year: February 2016

We continue our review of 2016 today with a look back at February...

February began with the start of a new project for David as he began work on a new film shoot for Mad To Be Normal.

Mad to be Normal tells the fascinating story of world-renowned Scottish psychiatrist R.D.Laing and his unique community at Kingsley Hall, East London, during the 1960’s. R.D. Laing was one of Scotland's most creative thinkers, and in the 60’s and 70’s was the world’s best-known psychiatrist. His books regularly topped the student best-seller lists in the USA, he shared the same stage as bands like the Grateful Dead, recited poetry at jazz clubs and was never far away from controversy. The psychiatric establishment regularly tried to close his community at Kingsley Hall, seeing his occasional therapeutic use of LSD and his belief in metanoia (self-healing) as irresponsible and unscientific.

David said of the project, “I have long been fascinated by the life and work of RD Laing. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and discover this important man and I am honoured and thrilled to be involved in telling this story. Robert Mullan’s passion for the subject is inspiring and the presence of the brilliant Elisabeth Moss makes this something I cannot wait to start work on.”

It was announced that a brand new Tenth Doctor novel, In The Blood, based on David's portrayal of the character in Doctor Who, was to be written by Jenny Colgan and released by BBC Books to tie in with the previously announced Big Finish audio adventures.

David's Jessica Jones character Kilgrave made Rolling Stone's 40 Greatest TV Villains Of All Time poll and he proved his hearthrob status once again with a place in the Drama Channel's poll of most attractive leading men. His audio work was recognised too, with Audible's Carmilla receiving a nod in nominations at the 2016 Audie Awards.

Wizard World made many an American Whovian's dreams come true when they announced that they were to bring both David Tennant and Matt Smith together for an exclusive event in New York later in the year. They also went on to be announced for St. Louis.

The art work for the eagerly anticipated Tenth Doctor audio adventures was released by Big Finish.

Praise for Marvel's Jessica Jones continued with David receiving a nomination for Best Supporting TV Actor at the Saturn Awards and the final episode of the series, AKA Smile, being nominated in the Nebula Awards.

The month was rounded off with another guest appearance from David in Disney's Jake And TheNeverland Pirates where he returned to his role as Dread The Evil Genie for the episode Dread the Pharaoh!
