The BBC Confirm: No Christopher Eccleston For The 50th Anniversary Special

In response to recent tabloid rumours that Christopher Eccleston had pulled out of the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special just as it began filming, the BBC have now confirmed that Eccleston, who played the Ninth Doctor in the 2005 season, was never attached to the show.

An official source said:

"Chris met with Steven Moffat a couple of times to talk about Steven's plans for the Doctor Who 50th anniversary episode. After careful thought, Chris decided not to be in the episode. He wishes the team all the best."

On Saturday, the BBC confirmed that David Tennant and Billie Piper would be returning as the Tenth Doctor and Rose for the special episode which began filming in Wales this week. They join Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman with John Hurt and Joanna Page also confirmed as cast members. The episode, which will be shot in 3D, is expected to be screened (in 3D and 2D) on the day of the anniversary, Saturday 23rd November, and will also have a limited cinematic release.

  1. This is sooo bad, having the three last doctors would have been awesome!

  2. How very sad it is to hear this news, Christopher Eccleston ushered in a new era of Doctor Who and introduced a new generation to the wonders of Doctor Who and its brilliant writers. He will be missed, and despite what he might think, he is attached to the show! Wishing him all the best and I am looking forward to the special celebration!

    1. Steven Moffat has confirmed that she will return. But the the details of when or how have not been released. It has yet to be confirmed if she will even be in the 50th Anniversary. although if she is going to be back it makes sense to have her in the 50th Anniversary episode.

    3. I don't remember which episode, but I think it might have been the Demon's Run episode, River tells Rory, "Two Doctors? That's another birthday." Something to think about.

  4. How disappointing! I was looking so forward to seeing all of them together. I'm sure it will still be great but just not as great now. :(

  5. Why have a 50th Doctor Who anniversary, if you are only going to have 2 Doctors in the show? That's not the making of an "anniversary" show/movie. An anniversary edition should be something of surprise and excitement. Doctor Who fans expect to see as many Doctors as possible, I know I do. Something tells me this anniversary show will be a total let down for folks on both sides of the Pond.

    1. Yes. Exactly right.

Some argue that it's overkill, but honestly, it's the very essence of Who.

    2. I agree! At first they said they were going to have all the Doctors (that they could), but now we're only hearing about David and Matt, both of whom I love, but come on this is an anniversary, and the 50th one at that! :'(

    3. Um sorry to crash on your comment there but Tom baker (4th Doctor) will also be making an apperance. and basically the rest of them. (The ones who are not dead yet anyway). No news on the 8th Doctor though.

  11. Haven't really seen the acting fires burn for Chris so why ....

  12. Well, he is entitled to do that, just like Tom Baker did back in the day, and now Tom is back on board years later with Big Finish and recording new audio dramas as the Fourth Doctor and will appear alongside 5,6,7 and 8 in a an actual 5 Doctor audio special called "The Light at the End". Chris was a great Doctor. Don't be mean to him :)

  14. the only thing good to come out of 9 was 10...

  15. The only sad thing is the show wasted one of only twelve regenerations for the Doctor on him. David Tennant should have done the first season of the the new Doctor Who series :)
